In an alarming incident at a Walmart in Traverse City, Michigan, Matthew Kolakowski witnessed a man, later identified as Bradford Gille, allegedly stabbing individuals as he rushed towards the checkout. Kolakowski quickly reacted, instructing his daughter to stay put and decided to confront the attacker. He recalled locking eyes with Gille before he chased him outside, where he saw Gille stab an elderly woman. Armed only with a shopping cart, Kolakowski aimed to disrupt Gille’s attack.

Kolakowski’s decisive actions, along with two other bystanders, were pivotal in restraining Gille. A man with a firearm pointed it at Gille, demanding he drop his knife, which he ultimately did. Kolakowski then managed to tackle Gille to the ground until police arrived. His bravery has been lauded by local authorities, including Grand Traverse County Sheriff Michael Shea, and the incident swiftly gained attention on social media.

Gille, 42, has been charged with terrorism and 11 counts of attempted murder, but authorities have yet to determine a motive for his violent rampage with a nearly 9cm knife. The victims, aged between 29 to 84, included both shoppers and a Walmart employee, and fortunately, all were expected to survive.

Medical professionals and law enforcement noted Gille’s troubling history of mental health issues, including previous arrests and a history of violence. Just days before the stabbings, local authorities sought to place him in protective custody due to concerns over his wellbeing. Unfortunately, they couldn’t locate him in time to prevent the attack.

Kolakowski recounted Gille’s erratic behaviour during the confrontation, describing him as wild-eyed and drenched in sweat, attempting to rationalise the unprovoked violence. His brother-in-law, Chris O’Brien, who filmed the encounter, praised Kolakowski for his courageous actions, suggesting they likely thwarted further bloodshed. The swift response from bystanders, coupled with the arrival of law enforcement within minutes, helped diffuse an escalating crisis with the potential for even greater tragedy.

Gille appeared agitated during his arraignment, with a not-guilty plea entered on his behalf. Bond was set at US$100,000 as the community continues to grapple with both the shocking attack and the incredible bravery displayed by Kolakowski and the other civilians involved.
