Hawthorn defender Jack Scrimshaw has received a significant three-match suspension for “striking” Essendon player Jordan Ridley during a match on Friday night. The AFL’s match review officer deemed Scrimshaw’s actions as careless conduct, resulting in severe impact and high contact. The incident occurred in the second quarter at the MCG when Scrimshaw swung his arm and made high contact with Ridley, leading to Ridley being concussed and unable to continue the game.
Ridley, unable to assist his team, watched as the Bombers fell short against the Hawks, who triumphed with a score of 17.9 (111) to 12.13 (85). This victory came on the back of Hawthorn’s previous win over the Swans, where they also secured a 20-point lead.
The club is now considering whether to accept the suspension or appeal the decision at the tribunal. Scrimshaw’s absence is compounded by the fact that he suffered a head knock later in the match while clashing with teammate Josh Battle, which resulted in him being substituted due to a concussion, according to league protocols. Even if Scrimshaw had not been suspended for the strike on Ridley, he would still miss the upcoming match against Carlton.
In other game highlights, Hawthorn’s standout small forwards, known as the “mosquito fleet,” made a notable impact by scoring ten goals collectively. Nick Watson and Dylan Moore led the charge with three goals each, while Jack Ginnivan and Blake Hardwick contributed two goals apiece. For the Bombers, Jye Caldwell was a key player with 36 disposals, while Hawthorn’s Karl Amon recorded 28 disposals, showcasing a competitive midfield effort from both sides.
