As Round 11 approaches in the rugby league, all eyes are on player selections for the upcoming State of Origin series opener. Up to 40 players may be vying for spots in the Queensland or NSW squads, with 13 players seemingly secured for selection provided they avoid injuries or suspensions this weekend.

Coaches Billy Slater for Queensland and Laurie Daley for NSW are set to announce their teams for Game 1 of the 2025 series on Monday, just in time for the match scheduled for May 28. Currently, key positions and selection battles are generating buzz, with significant stakes for individual players.

One of the most debated decisions is whether Kalyn Ponga will reclaim the Maroons’ fullback position after his club, Newcastle, struggled recently, losing six out of seven matches. In contrast, Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow has impressed with his dynamic performances for the Dolphins, prompting speculations about a potential switch from his usual centre spot. Ponga’s upcoming performance against the Eels could cement or jeopardise his selection.

Another pressing question is who will partner Nathan Cleary in the halves for NSW. Despite missing out last year due to injury, Cleary is expected to be a starter, but with competition from Mitchell Moses and Jarome Luai, Daley faces a tough decision on who will take the five-eighth role. Conversely, Queensland’s strong wing options have Slater considering past selections versus current form, with Xavier Coates, Murray Taulagi, and Selwyn Cobbo all in the mix.

Moreover, discussions swirl around whether to retain Jake Trbojevic as NSW captain, as his recent form has been under scrutiny. Trbojevic is revered for his leadership but may face exclusion given the performance of other candidates vying for key forward spots.

In terms of hooker, Harry Grant’s fitness remains a concern following a hamstring injury, casting uncertainty over his participation. Should he not fully recover, Slater will need to rethink his strategy, particularly concerning the utility role on the bench.

The selection saga further extends to James Tedesco, whose fluctuating form may impact his chances, particularly next to rising stars like Ryan Papenhuyzen. Tedesco’s return to form with the Roosters places him back in contention, highlighted by the decline in Edwards’ performances with Penrith.

Finally, both states boast impressive depth in the back-row positions, with numerous players such as Liam Martin and Angus Crichton for NSW, and newcomers like Beau Fermor for Queensland pushing for selection.

As both teams prepare, the impending announcements will reveal much about each coach’s vision and strategy leading into one of rugby league’s most anticipated clashes.
