In a tragic incident at the Campus Risbergska adult education centre in Örebro, Sweden, around 10 individuals, including the gunman, were killed in the country’s deadliest mass shooting, as described by Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson. The shooting occurred shortly after a national exam had concluded, resulting in a chaotic scene with emergency services quickly deployed and helicopters overhead. The police have reported that they are still determining the total number of fatalities and injuries, with investigations ongoing.
Kristersson characterised the violence as brutal and reassured the public that answers regarding the motive will emerge in time. Although the perpetrator reportedly acted alone and was not previously known to law enforcement, no links to terrorism have been established so far.
Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer highlighted the societal impact of the event, stating that Swedes had previously believed such violence was unlikely to occur in their country. The shooting drew widespread condemnation, with reactions from European leaders reflecting deep concern over the incident’s implications for public safety, especially in schools. Swedish King Carl XVI Gustaf extended condolences to the victims’ families and praised the emergency response teams. Witnesses described hearing multiple gunshots, prompting swift evacuation efforts as students sought safety.
