Australian patients battling lung and liver cancer will soon benefit from a groundbreaking treatment, Tecentriq, which is now being included in the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme. This innovation allows for a life-saving immunotherapy administered via a quick seven-minute injection, dramatically reducing the cost from over $120,000 annually to just $133.40 for concession card holders and $547.70 for general patients.

One of the initial recipients, Melbourne father Kon Adamis, diagnosed with aggressive lung cancer in April 2022, expressed optimism about how this change can transform not just his life, but many others facing similar challenges. Until now, Tecentriq was only available through costly infusions, often requiring lengthy hospital visits. With the new injectable format, treatment time will decrease significantly, freeing up hospital resources.

Health Minister Mark Butler emphasised the importance of accessibility to this treatment, describing it as a momentous step forward for patients and the healthcare system. Adamis, who believes this treatment has greatly aided his survival, looks forward to receiving care in the comfort of his own home rather than in a hospital chair.

While this is a significant advancement for cancer treatment in Australia, Minister Butler hinted at the potential for further developments in accessible immunotherapy options in the future.
