In an astonishing display at the national athletics championships held at Sydney Olympic Park, 18-year-old Gout Gout shattered both his own Australian 200m record and the world under-20 record, finishing in a remarkable time of 19.67 seconds. His performance not only secured him the title but also marked a new milestone in Australian athletics. Aidan Murphy, who placed second, also broke the previous national record with a time of 19.88 seconds, highlighting the extraordinary nature of the event.
The wind conditions were within legal limits at +1.7 metres per second, a crucial factor in ensuring the legitimacy of both athletes’ times. Gout’s remarkable run eclipsed the 20.02 seconds Australian record he set just a year prior. He now stands just 0.48 seconds away from Usain Bolt’s world record of 19.19 seconds, established in 2009.
Expressing his elation, Gout mentioned the pressure he felt leading up to the race, stating that he had been focused on running a legal sub-20 second time for months. He had set a mental target of 19.75 seconds, and when he clocked in at 19.67, he felt a huge relief. Previously, he had achieved a time of 19.84 seconds but under illegal wind conditions, making this achievement even more significant.
Gout originally broke the Australian 200m record at the national school championships in December 2024 and continued to lower the mark this year. He plans to skip the upcoming Glasgow Commonwealth Games to focus on the world under-20 championships in Eugene, Oregon, where he aims to capture the gold medal in his final appearance at this level.
Mukphy’s performance also stood out, as he dramatically improved his personal best from 20.41 to 19.88 seconds. His mother, Tania Van Heer, previously earned bronze in the women’s 100m at the 1998 Commonwealth Games, adding a notable legacy to his accomplishment.
Earlier on the same day, Peter Bol clinched his fifth national title in the 800m, finishing in 1:45.60, while Abbey Caldwell’s impressive sprint in the women’s 800m led her to victory with a time of 1:58.57. Other event winners included Michelle Jenneke in the women’s 100m hurdles and Nicola Olyslagers in the women’s high jump, ensuring a thrilling day of athletics.
Gout is set for a busy competitive schedule throughout Europe and the US in 2026, including a race at the prestigious Prefontaine Classic. The excitement surrounding his performance continues to elevate his profile in the athletics world, with fans eagerly anticipating his future races.
