Google Abandons Commitment Against Using AI for Weapons or Surveillance

Google has updated its AI ethics policy, which now omits its earlier commitment to refrain from developing AI technologies for military or surveillance purposes. This shift allows for the potential use of AI in weaponry and monitoring that extends beyond international norms—a significant change from its previous stance. The company initially set out its AI Principles in 2018 after facing backlash, including a petition signed by over 4,000 employees against involvement in military projects.

The recent changes were communicated via a blog post by Google executives, who noted that evolving frameworks from democratic nations have influenced their perspective on AI’s capabilities and associated risks. They argue that there is a need for democracies to take the lead in AI development, ensuring it aligns with core values such as freedom, equality, and human rights.

Since the introduction of ChatGPT by OpenAI in 2022, the AI landscape has progressed rapidly, while legislative measures pertaining to AI ethics and transparency struggle to keep pace. This policy update marks a notable departure from Google’s earlier principles, which emphasized ethical boundaries that the company previously adhered to, including rejecting a major Pentagon contract over concerns it conflicted with these values.
