Gold Coast’s Complimentary Tip Service at Risk

The Gold Coast City Council is currently contemplating the introduction of fees for its tip service, which has traditionally been free for residents. This debate arises amid escalating costs and significant financial strain on the waste management system, alongside a growing landfill. Proposed charges are set at $10 for cars and $25 for trailer vehicles, with an alternative suggestion involving an increase in rates for all residents coupled with a voucher system.

Concerns have emerged that implementing such fees may inadvertently stimulate illegal dumping. Councillor Glenn Tozer remarked that this decision could be one of the council’s most significant, while Councillor Dan Doran emphasised the necessity for further community consultation, stating, “I don’t think we have appropriately taken the community on the journey.”

Additionally, the council is weighing the option to close two underutilised waste centres in Currumbin and Numbinbah Valley due to their low patronage.

This ongoing discussion highlights the complex balance between managing the city’s waste services financially and ensuring responsible disposal practices among residents.
