Plans for a monumental redevelopment of the Gold Coast Turf Club in Bundall, estimated at a billion dollars, have been unveiled. This ambitious project, a collaboration between the Gold Coast Turf Club and Aquis, is set to transform a two-hectare expanse into the ‘Sunlight’ precinct.
The redevelopment will feature three towers comprising a total of 557 residential and holiday apartments, with the tallest tower projected to reach 21 storeys. The initiative received approval from the Gold Coast City Council in mid-2022, despite some local residents expressing apprehensions about the scale and impact of the project.
Gold Coast Turf Club’s CEO, Steve Lines, emphasised the development’s vision to offer a diverse range of amenities. Lines articulated the hope that visitors would not only participate in race days but also enjoy fine dining and leisure activities, including a rooftop bar, creating a vibrant atmosphere. Aquis’s John Fung shared that the planning stage has been comprehensive, spanning several years, and expressed his excitement at the project’s current progress.
A key aspect of the redevelopment involves the removal of an existing pavilion to facilitate the construction of a trackside apartment tower boasting views stretching from Bundall to the beach. In addition to housing, the plans include a market area behind the towers along with rooftop pools and wellness facilities, aiming to enhance the appeal of the precinct.
The introduction of night racing and updated lighting last year is part of ongoing efforts to secure the site’s future viability, aligning with the broader vision for the Gold Coast Turf Club. Construction on the ‘Sunlight’ precinct is expected to commence by 2027, marking a new chapter for the iconic thoroughbred racing venue.
As this project progresses, it represents not only a strategic investment in infrastructure but also a significant step towards revitalising and diversifying the entertainment landscape in the Gold Coast region.
