Gold Coast Suns coach Damien Hardwick has fired back following a cheeky comment from St Kilda’s coach Ross Lyon. Ahead of their match on Sunday, Lyon labelled the Suns the AFL’s “nepo baby,” seemingly referencing the advantages the Suns have enjoyed from their academy and their relatively easier fixture schedule.

Despite the banter, the game did not favour the Suns, who secured an 80-61 victory over the Saints. In his post-match press conference, Hardwick expressed his thoughts on Lyon’s remarks, describing them as somewhat disrespectful. He highlighted the contrasts between coaching at Richmond and his current role at Gold Coast, indicating that the Suns face a unique set of challenges.

Hardwick pointedly noted the low attendance at the Saints’ home game, with only 13,000 fans present, suggesting that St Kilda should concentrate on improving their own situation rather than taking jabs at other clubs. He emphasised the importance of looking inward before critiquing others, advising Lyon to focus on his team’s performance and circumstances.

When asked if he would reach out to Lyon or the Saints to discuss the matter further, Hardwick indicated he had no plans to do so. His remarks underline the competitive tension between the clubs as they navigate their respective challenges in the AFL landscape.
