Noise-detection cameras may soon be introduced on the Gold Coast in response to growing concerns from residents about reckless driving behaviour, particularly from hoon drivers. Surfers Paradise MP, John-Paul Langbroek, has received numerous complaints from locals across the region, from Main Beach to Carrara, highlighting the need for action.
Currently, mobile CCTV cameras are being employed to monitor dangerous driving, but there is a push for more advanced technology, such as noise-detection cameras. These cameras, similar to those being tested in Sydney, have shown success in identifying habitual offenders, with nearly half of the 1,000 noise incidents recorded since December linked to them.
Langbroek criticises the Labour party for failing to address the issue of hooning and anti-social driving over the last ten years. He states, “Hooning and anti-social behaviour hasn’t been acted on over the last decade by the Labour party, and I’m determined to do something about it.” While he awaits the trial results of the noise-detection cameras in New South Wales, he emphasizes the importance of enforcing existing laws to tackle the problem urgently.
In a bid to address these concerns, Langbroek has organised a meeting with the police minister to discuss potential strategies aimed at curbing hooning behaviour before it worsens.
