Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate has urged the Queensland government to investigate the possibility of hydrogen-powered trams for the area’s future light rail developments, particularly as plans for Stage 4 remain undecided. Currently, the Gold Coast’s electric light rail system operates from Helensvale to Broadbeach South, with Stage 3 extending southward to Burleigh Heads, under construction since 2022 and expected to conclude next year.

Businesses along the route have reported significant disruption due to ongoing construction, with road closures and obstructions affecting foot traffic. The proposed Stage 4 aims to extend the light rail further south to Coolangatta, incorporating a stop at Gold Coast Airport. Public consultation for this final stage wrapped up earlier this year, and the Department of State Development, Infrastructure and Planning is now assessing the gathered feedback.

In light of the disruptions and environmental concerns, Mayor Tate is reaching out to Deputy Premier Jarrod Bleijie to discuss the feasibility of hydrogen trams, highlighting potential benefits such as shorter construction periods and enhanced environmental outcomes. The pursuit of innovative transport solutions could position Gold Coast as a leader in sustainable public transit.
