A father and son duo from the Gold Coast, Dr Geoff Wilson and his son Kit, have embarked on an ambitious expedition known as “Project Zero,” which aims to traverse from the South to the North Pole while examining the effects of global warming. This two-year adventure prioritises carbon-neutral travel and leads them through a variety of challenging landscapes.

As they approach the halfway mark of their journey, the pair have already encountered significant obstacles, showcasing the perils of their undertaking. Wilson described the contrasting experiences of battling turbulent seas one day, only to find themselves in stillness the next, illustrating the unpredictable nature of their adventure.

Amidst these challenges, the expedition has been punctuated by moments of profound awe and reflection. Dr Wilson shared that experiences like a breathtaking night in the wilderness serve as reminders of humanity’s smallness in the grand scheme of nature. He noted, “Our time here on earth is short,” emphasising the fleeting nature of existence and the misconception that humans can dominate the natural world.

The primary aim of Project Zero is to gather data that will enhance understanding of the real-world implications of climate change. This expedition not only seeks to document their experiences but also to contribute meaningful insights into environmental shifts affecting our planet.

The journey thus far has been a mix of harsh realities and enlightening moments, urging a deeper contemplation of our relationship with nature.
