Gold Coast Experiences Volunteer Shortage in Lead-Up to 2032 Brisbane Olympic Games

The Gold Coast is facing a notable decline in volunteer numbers, which raises concerns about its capability to host significant events, particularly the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. A recent report indicates that only 11 per cent of the local population engages in volunteering, a figure that is slightly below the average and suggests there is considerable potential for improvement, as noted by Glenn Tozer, Chair of the Lifestyle Committee.

This decline in volunteer participation is alarming as major events often depend heavily on the dedication of volunteers. Avril Harris from Experience Gold Coast emphasises the importance of volunteers, stating, “Volunteers are the backbone for so many events; without them, many events simply wouldn’t occur.” The success of various activities like Supercars, marathons, and festivals is contingent upon the commitment of these volunteers.

The forthcoming Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games will necessitate a significant volunteer force similar to the 45,000 involved in the Paris 2024 Games. Local resident Nicci Wilson recalls her own start in volunteering during her children’s involvement in the Gold Coast Eisteddford, recognising it as a joyful and fulfilling experience.

In light of the dwindling volunteer numbers, there are initiatives aimed at galvanising the community to participate more actively. Tozer hopes that over the next few years, residents will “dip their toe in the water” to increase volunteer engagement before the 2032 event, reinforcing the crucial role of community involvement in the success of major gatherings.
