Recent survey results indicate that approximately 75% of Gold Coast residents support the construction of the proposed Gold Coast Arena at Carey Park in Nerang. This key development was discussed during a full council meeting, highlighting strong local backing for the arena, which has already secured land from the state government.

The indoor arena is designed to host up to 12,000 spectators for various events, including sports and concerts, and is seen as a pivotal venue for the upcoming 2032 Brisbane Olympic Games. It’s expected to significantly boost activity in the Gold Coast’s central business district.

As the project advances to the tendering stage, its $480 million budget aims to be covered entirely through private investment. This arena development is poised to enhance the city’s infrastructure, potentially turning Southport into a lively centre for entertainment and sports.

However, the project is not without its challengers. Some local residents have expressed concerns, launching a campaign to protect Carey Park due to worries regarding the arena’s environmental impact and potential disruptions to the community. Despite the overall support shown in the survey, these dissenting voices highlight a divide in local opinion regarding the project.
