Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, who wed in 1991, tragically passed away in their New Mexico home earlier this year. The local medical examiner confirmed their deaths were due to natural causes, occurring at least a week apart and linked to separate health issues.
Betsy Arakawa, aged 65, was found deceased in their bathroom. Investigators initially estimated her death based on her last known activities, with surveillance indicating she had been seen shopping on February 11. However, further cell phone records revealed that she made calls to her medical centre on February 12, including a call to Cloudberry Health.
Gene Hackman, 95, passed away shortly after on February 18, with authorities noting that the last heartbeat recorded by his pacemaker occurred that day. He died from cardiovascular complications compounded by advanced Alzheimer’s disease, which significantly contributed to his passing.
The couple shared three dogs: Zinna, an Australian Kelpie mix, tragically passed away alongside Arakawa. The surviving dogs, Bear and Nikita, have since been rehomed and are living in safe, suitable environments. Santa Fe County Animal Control, in collaboration with family members, ensured the well-being of the dogs during this difficult time.
Both Hackman and Arakawa were beloved and well-regarded, and their deaths have evoked a sense of loss among friends and admirers alike.
