Authorities have revealed that Oscar-winning actor Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, were likely deceased for around nine days before their bodies were discovered at their home in New Mexico. An investigation into the circumstances surrounding their death has been deemed “suspicious enough” to warrant a thorough examination.
The findings have emerged from Hackman’s pacemaker, which recorded its last activity on February 17. Sheriff Adan Mendoza suggested this might indicate that it was the last day of Hackman’s life. Investigators found both Hackman, 95, and Arakawa in separate rooms of their home, alongside their dog.
A 911 call from maintenance workers reporting that they observed two unconscious individuals through a window prompted a police response. Upon entry, Arakawa’s body was located in a bathroom with scattered pills around her, while Hackman was found near the kitchen. Preliminary autopsies indicated no external trauma, and initial assessments found no signs of carbon monoxide or gas leaks in the home.
Items taken from the residence for investigation included mobile phones and three medications. Toxicology reports are pending, with results potentially taking months. Sheriff Mendoza has confirmed that both deceased individuals tested negative for carbon monoxide poisoning. The couple had last been in contact with maintenance staff approximately two weeks prior to their discovery, suggesting they could have been deceased for several days or possibly weeks.
Respected for his illustrious film career, Hackman starred in classics like “The French Connection,” “Unforgiven,” and “Hoosiers.” Following his retirement from acting at 74, he and Arakawa had enjoyed a quiet life in Santa Fe for over a decade. The local community fondly remembers him as a humble resident who preferred a low profile in contrast to his Hollywood fame.
As the investigation continues, authorities are meticulously examining all possibilities, including the analysis of phone records and other potential evidence to establish a clearer timeline of events leading up to their untimely death.
Hackman’s family has expressed their devastation over the loss, stating that while he was loved by many for his talent, to them, he was simply “Dad and Grandpa.” A tribute to the actor is expected at the upcoming Oscars ceremony, highlighting his significant contributions to cinema.
