The highly anticipated second iteration of Fyre Festival has been postponed, with organisers announcing that it will no longer take place in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. Originally scheduled for May 30, festival promoter Billy McFarland indicated that uncertainty remains over whether the festival can proceed next month due to the need for a new venue.
Tickets for Fyre Fest 2 have been unavailable for purchase on the official website since they went on sale in February. In a statement to ticket holders, organisers affirmed that plans for the festival are ongoing, stating, “We are vetting new locations and will announce our host destination soon. Our priorities remain unchanged: delivering an unforgettable, safe, and transparent experience.”
This announcement coincided with a public statement from the Playa del Carmen municipal government, which clarified that no event by that name was set to occur in the city. Their translated statement claimed that “there are no records, plans, or conditions” for the festival in the municipality, solidifying the reasons behind the postponement.
In response, McFarland disputed the government’s claims, maintaining that the festival’s team has been collaborating with local officials since March to secure a safe environment for the event.
Originally announced by McFarland in February, Fyre Fest 2 was touted as a “three-day escape” in the Caribbean, where attendees could engage with their favourite entertainers by day and enjoy music celebrations at night. However, no performers have been announced yet.
The original Fyre Festival in 2017 is infamous for its disastrous execution, having been heavily marketed by celebrities and influencers but ultimately culminating in inadequate accommodation, chaotic organisation, and the notorious “cheese sandwich”. Following those events, McFarland faced legal troubles, resulting in a six-year prison sentence for wire fraud, bank fraud, and making false statements to federal law enforcement. He was released in 2022 after serving nearly four years.
As anticipation builds for Fyre Fest 2, the organisers are working to ensure that any future plans will meet the high expectations set by both the festival’s past failures and the public’s hopes for a successful revival.
