Future of Proposed Gold Coast Arena in Doubt Due to Funding Issues

The Gold Coast City Council’s plans to build a new 12,000-seat indoor arena are facing serious challenges as the likelihood of securing state government funding appears to be diminishing. With an estimated budget of nearly $500 million, the council is actively seeking external investors to help finance the ambitious project.

Current economic conditions, along with competing priorities such as addressing state debt and undertaking projects related to the upcoming 2032 Olympics, are raising doubts over the government’s readiness to provide financial support. Southport MP Rob Molhoek has voiced concerns about whether the arena should take precedence over other pressing issues, though he acknowledges the appeal of having a premier concert venue in the Gold Coast.

Despite these reservations, the Gold Coast City Council remains committed to advocating for the arena. Mayor Donna Gates emphasised the need for financial backing, highlighting that ratepayers cannot shoulder the entire cost. She described the project as a significant opportunity for the city’s cultural and entertainment landscape, noting the vision for a large stadium centrally located in the city.

The proposed arena is designed to serve as a versatile indoor entertainment venue, primarily hosting concerts and sporting events. The site is intended to be located opposite the Broadwater Parklands at Carey Park in Southport. A community survey regarding the proposal was completed in December, and if approved, construction would take approximately five years.

An update on the status of the arena project is anticipated from the Gold Coast City Council to councillors next month. The future of the arena remains uncertain as discussions and evaluations continue.
