Australia is currently facing pressure on diesel demand due to shifting consumer habits, prompting the nation to rely on neighbouring countries for fuel supply. Although there are challenges in meeting diesel demand, indications show that additional supply is starting to flow through import terminals.

Overnight, nearly 100 service stations received restocks, reducing the number of stations out of diesel from 410 to 312 nationwide, with improvements noted across all states. However, farmers remain concerned about fuel availability. The President of NSW Farmers, Xavier Martin, articulated this struggle, stating they are “running on fumes” amid ongoing supply challenges.

Australia’s emergency fuel reserves remain stable, with 39 days of petrol, 30 days of jet fuel, and 29 days of diesel available. The rising demand for fuel has been noted, particularly as Viva Energy’s Geelong refinery recorded a 30% increase leading into Easter. This trend has led to some consumers “stockpiling”, which has been attributed not only to panic buying but also to adjustments in usage patterns across industries, especially agriculture.

While a substantial amount of fuel is on its way from the United States, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is still advocating for stronger ties with closer suppliers like Singapore, which has an increasing need for Australian gas. Energy Minister Chris Bowen highlighted ongoing discussions with regional counterparts to ensure Australia can rely on them as consistent energy providers, confirming these collaborations are crucial during the current crisis.

Furthermore, there are potential diplomatic avenues being explored, including planning for a visit from Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi to discuss oil supply exchanges for Australian energy resources. This strategy reflects the government’s proactive approach to navigating the current energy landscape.

In conclusion, while Australia is experiencing fluctuations in diesel supply and consumer behaviour is shifting, efforts are underway to increase imports and strengthen partnerships with regional allies. Authorities remain vigilant as they work to stabilise fuel availability for all sectors, particularly agriculture, amid ongoing market challenges.
