Ryan Papenhuyzen, the talented fullback for the Melbourne Storm, remains optimistic that his ongoing injury challenges won’t significantly hinder his team’s finals campaign, even as his comeback is delayed by another week. Having battled a series of injuries throughout his career, Papenhuyzen is currently sidelined due to a calf strain, marking his third consecutive week off the field.

Despite the setback, he reassured fans that the injury isn’t severe. The medical staff at Melbourne are adopting a “cautious approach” to ensure he recovers appropriately ahead of the finals, expressing hope that he could return as early as next week. In the meantime, Nick Meaney will continue to take on fullback responsibilities.

Addressing the media on 2GB’s Wide World of Sports, Papenhuyzen described his calf strain as a minor annoyance but emphasised the importance of resting to ensure his readiness for the critical end-of-season matches. When questioned about the necessity to manage his injury for the remainder of the season, he acknowledged that ongoing management might be required, highlighting the need to stay focused on rehabilitation for past knee and ankle issues as well.

Even with the lingering injury concerns, Papenhuyzen’s focus remains firmly on winning the 2025 premiership. The Storm currently holds second position on the ladder, behind Canberra, and he believes the team is continuously evolving. “We just keep building,” he stated, reflecting on the squad’s journey over the season. Initially in search of their identity, the Storm now boasts a solid foundation and a balanced approach, which Papenhuyzen feels is essential as they prepare for the finals.

He concluded by expressing his confidence in the team’s ability to seize crucial moments during the high-stakes games ahead, affirming that they will continue progressing in a positive direction. As the finals approach, Papenhuyzen and the Storm are keen to maintain their momentum and make a significant impact.
