The recent surge in women’s rugby league is highlighted in Nine’s new documentary, Breakthrough, set to premiere at 8.30pm (AEST) on Wednesday night, ahead of the State of Origin series opener. This documentary features notable personalities such as Ruan Sims, Allana Ferguson, and Andrew Johns, discussing the evolution of the women’s Origin series, which transformed into a three-game event for the first time last year.

Although Queensland and New South Wales faced off in interstate matches since 1999, it wasn’t until 2018 that the game was officially recognised as part of the State of Origin. Johns expressed his astonishment at the high level of play displayed during that inaugural match, which drew a large crowd at North Sydney Oval. Until 2023, the rivalry featured a single match; however, a two-game format was introduced, leading to Queensland controversially claiming the shield that year. After advocates pushed for three games to align with the men’s series, the NRL agreed, resulting in an exhilarating spectacle last season.

In a memorable moment, Queensland’s Lauren Brown kicked a field goal in torrential rain during game two, securing a surprise victory and prompting a decisive game that resulted in the Maroons’ triumph in Townsville. Sims reflected on the challenges women faced in establishing a foothold in rugby league, recalling how players previously sacrificed jobs and livelihoods for the sport.

Ferguson, a former Jillaroos star, recalled the emotional struggle of limited options for female players after junior leagues, while contemporary players can aspire to compete in the NRLW and be selected for state teams. The documentary also showcases the success of players like Jamie Chapman, who captured attention last year with a spectacular solo try, which Johns described as "a marvel."

Chapman shared her journey, expressing gratitude for the opportunities now available for female rugby league players, noting that she was among the first girls to play the sport. She emphasised that her childhood passion has now evolved into a career where she can proudly represent her country. The upcoming 2025 Origin series will see the Blues and Maroons face off at Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium this Thursday night. Overall, Breakthrough captures a pivotal moment in women’s rugby league, highlighting the significant progress and the promising future of the sport.
