French resort town enforces rules against ‘half-naked’ holidaymakers

A resort town in France, Les Sables d’Olonne, has implemented fines for individuals found strolling about topless or in swimsuits outside designated beach areas. Local authorities have declared that those walking “half-naked” may be penalised with fines reaching €150 (approximately $266). Mayor Yannick Moreau emphasised this initiative on Facebook, denouncing such behaviour as “indecent” and stressing the need to respect local sensibilities.

Moreau stated that the rule is aimed at maintaining a sense of decency for residents who prefer not to encounter fellow citizens in a state of undress while going about their daily activities. The mayor outlined that this policy contributes to basic hygiene standards in public spaces like markets and shops. He encouraged police to rigorously enforce the new rule, reiterating that those wishing to flaunt their swimwear are welcome to make use of the town’s 11-kilometre stretch of beach.

The announcement included a promotional poster boasting the slogan “In Les Sables d’Olonne, respect doesn’t go on holiday,” which garnered positive feedback from numerous residents on social media. Comments ranged from support for the mayor’s stance to anecdotes of discomfort experienced by local shopkeepers due to inappropriate attire among visitors.

Interestingly, some individuals argued that the administration should focus on more pressing concerns, such as crime rates, rather than policing public attire. Les Sables d’Olonne joins several other French coastal towns, like Arcachon and La Grande-Motte, which have enacted similar fines for indecent dress in non-beach areas.

Internationally, this trend is not limited to France; Malaga in Spain has proposed fines as high as €750 ($1,332) for nudity in public spaces. This reflects a broader movement towards ensuring that tourists behave appropriately during their visits, with some local governments taking steps to educate visitors about acceptable conduct, including reminders to wear proper clothing.
