French authorities have successfully prevented a potential bomb attack near a Bank of America branch in Paris. Reports indicate that law enforcement apprehended one suspect while a second individual managed to flee the scene. The national anti-terrorism prosecutor’s office (PNAT) has initiated an investigation into possible terrorism-related charges linked to the incident.

The charges under consideration include attempted arson, the manufacturing of explosive devices, and the possession of such materials with the intent to cause considerable damage. A police spokesperson confirmed that one individual remains in custody.

Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez praised the swift actions of a police unit in thwarting what could have been a severe act of terrorism. He emphasised the continuing need for heightened vigilance amidst ongoing international tensions. Nuñez also commended the collaboration of security and intelligence agencies, highlighting their readiness in response to potential threats.

According to RTL radio, citing police sources, the thwarted attack unfolded early on a Saturday morning when officers noticed two suspects carrying a bag in close proximity to the bank. One suspect, reportedly attempting to ignite a device with a lighter, was apprehended, whereas the other escaped capture.

In light of escalating security concerns, particularly following the outbreak of the Iran conflict, French authorities have bolstered protective measures for certain individuals linked to the Iranian opposition and heightened security around locations deemed vulnerable, including those associated with US interests and the Jewish community.

The Paris police prefecture has yet to issue a statement on the event.
