A 20-year-old French national faces charges in Australia after allegedly attempting to import 22 kilograms of methamphetamine. He was intercepted at Sydney Airport on July 20 while arriving on a flight from Europe. During a routine check, Australian Border Force officers discovered 22 vacuum-sealed bags containing a crystalline substance concealed in his luggage.
Testing indicated that the substance tested positive for methamphetamine, which the Australian Federal Police (AFP) estimate to have a street value exceeding $20 million. The man has been charged with importing a commercial quantity of a border-controlled drug and possessing a commercial quantity of a border-controlled drug. Both charges carry a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.
Following his arrest, the man appeared in the Downing Centre Local Court on July 21, where bail was denied. He is scheduled to return to court on September 16 to face the charges.
