French actor Gérard Depardieu stood trial in Paris on charges of sexually assaulting two women during the making of the film “Les Volets Verts” in 2021, a case viewed as pivotal for the #MeToo movement in France. The 76-year-old is alleged to have groped a 54-year-old set dresser and a 34-year-old assistant director, facing up to five years in prison and a fine of €75,000 (approximately $81,000) if found guilty. Depardieu denies the allegations.
Outside the courtroom, Depardieu briefly assured reporters of his well-being and expressed willingness to answer questions during the trial. His lawyer, Jérémie Assous, proclaimed that they would demonstrate the accusations to be false, insisting that “the truth is on our side.” The trial has sparked considerable public interest as it tests France’s response to sexual violence in the wake of #MeToo.
Depardieu, celebrated for his extensive film career, has had long-standing controversies regarding his off-screen conduct. Over 20 women have accused him of various forms of misconduct, although only the current sexual assault case has progressed to court due to issues like lack of evidence in others.
Feminist historian Florence Montreynaud highlighted the significance of the trial, calling it a “historic moment” for women’s rights as demonstrators rallied outside the courthouse, highlighting societal shifts in attitudes towards sexual violence.
The trial echoes previous high-profile cases, including that of Gisèle Pelicot, which have raised awareness about sexual violence in France, a country traditionally ambivalent towards the #MeToo movement. While allegations of sexual misconduct are frequently voiced in Hollywood, France has been slower to confront powerful figures within its film industry.
At the time of the alleged assaults, Depardieu was already under investigation for a rape charge made by actress Charlotte Arnould—a case that remains unresolved.
Prosecutors claim Depardieu aggressively groped the plaintiffs, with witnesses allegedly present during the incidents. The trial, which may last several days, began after previous delays due to Depardieu’s health issues. Observers noted that both women appeared visibly emotional during proceedings, emphasizing the personal toll of the allegations.
In his defence, Depardieu’s lawyer sought to challenge the credibility of the allegations, speculating that the investigation was compromised. Amidst these serious allegations, the actor has maintained his innocence, stating in an open letter in October 2023, “Never, but never, have I abused a woman.”
With ongoing discussions about accountability for influential figures, the outcomes of this trial may not only impact Depardieu but also set a precedent for France’s approach to addressing sexual violence in the arts and beyond.
