Four major Victorian AFL clubs are vying for the signature of Port Adelaide star Zak Butters this season, even though he is contracted until 2026. According to Sam McClure from Nine’s Footy Classified, Essendon, Richmond, Hawthorn, and Collingwood believe they can entice the back-to-back Power best and fairest winner to make a switch sooner than expected.

McClure noted, “There are four Victorian clubs who think they can sway him not next year during his free agency, but at the end of this season.” He elaborated that these clubs perceive several factors that might influence Butters’ decision, one being Port Adelaide’s performance, which may not align with his expectations for the club’s status going into the new year.

Another key element in this situation is Butters’ strong relationship with Port Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley, who may be departing the club by season’s end. While Butters enjoys a solid rapport with the current coaching staff, including Josh Carr, there is speculation surrounding Hinkley’s potential exit, leading some clubs to believe this could impact Butters’ future.

McClure suggested that if Port Adelaide’s season does not unfold as anticipated, they might be inclined to consider trade offers for Butters, especially if these include top-end draft picks. Clubs like Richmond and Essendon, both of which possess two first-round picks in the upcoming draft, could present compelling opportunities for the Power.

It is worth noting that Butters is currently sidelined following knee surgery and could be out for another month, which may affect trade talks. Previously, he had also been linked to the Western Bulldogs, indicating a broader interest in his talents across the league.

In summary, while Zak Butters remains under contract with Port Adelaide until 2026, interest from four prominent Victorian clubs suggests that the upcoming season could see significant movement surrounding the talented midfielder, especially if Port Adelaide’s performance does not meet expectations.
