A powerful cold front has brought fierce winds exceeding 100km/h across four states, plunging the region into a chill. The effects were first felt in Western Australia, where winds reached a peak of 119km/h south of Perth on Monday. This intensity persisted as Weatherzone reported comparable gusts on Tuesday morning, with Thredbo in New South Wales recording 119km/h, followed closely by Mount Buller in Victoria at 107km/h, Mount Read in Tasmania at 104km/h, and Cape Willoughby in South Australia at 102km/h.
In Victoria, gusts continued to be significant, hitting 106km/h at Mount Hotham and 102km/h at Mount William in the Grampians. On Tuesday afternoon, conditions worsened for New South Wales and Victoria, with Mount Hotham reaching winds of 111km/h, while Thredbo saw an extraordinary 128km/h.
The relentless winds at Thredbo persisted for an hour and a half, maintaining speeds above 100km/h until midday. During this intense weather, the “feels like” temperature in Thredbo dropped dramatically to a biting -23 degrees Celsius.
Looking ahead, this cold front is anticipated to continue affecting the alpine areas, bringing expected snowfalls through to Thursday of this week.
