Tragedy struck Chatham, Illinois, where a car crashed into the YNOT After School Camp on Monday afternoon, resulting in the deaths of four individuals, including children. The incident occurred around 3:20 PM (Tuesday AEDT) when a vehicle drove through the east side of the camp, impacting several people outside before continuing through the building and exiting on the west side, according to Illinois State Police and the Chatham Police Department.
Those who lost their lives were aged between four and 18 years, with three victims being outside the building at the time of the crash, while one was struck inside. Numerous others sustained injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals, with at least one being airlifted for urgent care.
Visuals from the scene depict a significant breach in the building, which resembles a gym, demonstrating the chaos that ensued following the incident. Emergency responders, including law enforcement vehicles and a helicopter, were present as they worked to manage the aftermath.
Remarkably, the driver of the vehicle—who was the sole occupant—emerged from the accident without injuries and was subsequently taken to a local hospital for evaluation. As investigations began, Chatham police directed further inquiries to state police, who reported that additional information would be provided later.
Illinois Governor JB Pritzker expressed deep concern, indicating that his administration was closely monitoring developments regarding the crash. He called for community support during this troubling time, urging individuals to come together and offer prayers for those affected. The Chatham police echoed this sentiment, describing the event as a “terrible tragedy” that has impacted the entire community.
