Cornal Hendricks, a celebrated South African rugby player known for his contributions to both the Springboks and the national sevens team, has tragically passed away at the age of 37 due to a heart attack. The announcement was made by SA Rugby, which highlighted that Hendricks had a history of heart issues, having been diagnosed with a heart condition in 2015 that initially forced him into retirement. However, he made a remarkable return to the sport in 2019.

Mark Alexander, the president of SA Rugby, expressed his sorrow, describing Hendricks as a “remarkable athlete” who represented South Africa with dignity in both sevens and fifteens formats. His former team, the Bulls, remembered him as a “gentleman on and off the field” and celebrated his “zeal for life”.

Hendricks enjoyed a successful rugby career, playing 12 Test matches for the Springboks from 2014 to 2015, where he scored five tries. He was also a prominent figure in the sevens arena from 2011 to 2014, winning a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in 2014 and earning the title of South Africa’s player of the year in sevens that same year.

His club career spanned 17 years, during which he played for the Cheetahs and the Bulls in Super Rugby and the United Rugby Championship. His resilience and passion for the game were lauded by Alexander, who noted that Hendricks not only embraced his love for rugby but also uplifted those around him with his infectious energy and respect for others.

Gayton McKenzie, South Africa’s sports minister, paid tribute to Hendricks on social media, stating, “Rest in perfect peace Cornal Hendricks, you have made your mark by inspiring many.” Jake White, the Bulls’ director of rugby, acknowledged Hendricks’ significant second chance in rugby, emphasizing how he served as a source of inspiration for both his teammates and the wider South African community.

White also conveyed the privilege of coaching such a dynamic player, noting that Hendricks’ passion for life was truly infectious. The rugby community mourns the loss of a dedicated player and a cherished individual, remembering him as one of the finest within the sport.
