Christian Welch, a 30-year-old veteran of the Melbourne Storm, has announced his immediate retirement from rugby league due to ongoing concussion issues. The latest injury occurred during the team’s pre-season camp in Geelong, raising concerns about his long-term health after a series of significant injuries throughout his career, including knee injuries and an Achilles rupture. Reflecting on his time in the sport, Welch expressed gratitude for the camaraderie and memories built off the field, such as team bus rides and card games, despite the disappointment of losing some grand finals.

He acknowledged the challenges his body faced after a decade in the NRL, stating it was time to step back. Welch’s retirement has been confirmed following speculation sparked by his absence from Melbourne’s 2025 squad photo. The Storm will seek medical retirement approval for Welch, which would enable them to access the remaining funds on his contract. Over his career, Welch played 163 games for the Storm, contributing to premiership victories in 2017 and 2020, and also represented Queensland in six State of Origin matches. Melbourne’s season is set to begin against Parramatta on March 9.
