Former Big Brother narrator Mike Goldman experienced a terrifying incident when his Brisbane home caught fire early in the morning. Goldman recounted his experience on the Today Show, stating that he awoke to his smoke alarm sounding off at 4 AM and initially assumed it was due to low batteries. However, upon rising, he soon realised that the situation was far more serious, as the front of his house was in flames.
In a state of panic, Goldman quickly fled his home, grabbing his young son while leaving their dog behind. Despite his efforts to rescue the pet, he could not locate it amidst the chaos. Goldman recalled the frantic scene, noting, “Everyone’s screaming at me to get out. I singed the front of my hair… It was one of the scariest 10 to 15 minutes of my life.” He had to wait for the fire brigade to arrive, which ultimately saved his beloved dog.
Fortunately, the family’s son, who typically sleeps in a room close to the fire, was in their parents’ room that night, as he was unwell. Looking back, Goldman expressed relief, stating, “If he was in there… the smoke inhalation… jeez, I hate to think what might have happened.”
Fire investigators are currently on-site to determine the cause, which is suspected to be a fuse box, although this has yet to be officially confirmed. In light of the incident, Goldman urged everyone to ensure their smoke alarms are functional, declaring, “Just check your smoke alarms. If you don’t have them, make sure you get them.” His experience serves as a stark reminder of the importance of fire safety in every home.
