Former Australian Test cricketer and celebrated Ashes player Keith Stackpole has reportedly passed away at the age of 84. The announcement was made by renowned cricket writer Jon Anderson on 3AW Breakfast, who indicated that Stackpole’s son, Peter, informed him that his father died from a suspected heart attack.

Between 1966 and 1974, Stackpole represented Australia in 43 Test matches. Notably, he served as vice-captain under Ian Chappell during the 1972 Ashes tour, where he topped the run-scorers chart with an impressive 485 runs while opening the batting.

Anderson referred to Stackpole as the "godfather of Victorian cricket," highlighting his significant impact on the sport. He noted that Stackpole’s influence played a key role in Chappell’s success as captain, as their partnership was one of mutual support and synergy.

After retiring from cricket, Stackpole transitioned into media, taking on the role of a commentator for the ABC. He was also actively involved with Cricket Victoria, where he contributed as a mentor to several emerging talents, including Dean Jones and Brad Hodge.

The cricket community extends its heartfelt condolences to Stackpole’s wife, Pat, and their children—Peter, Tony, and Angela—as they mourn the loss of a cherished figure in Australian cricket.
