Foreign Minister Penny Wong has confirmed that the Australian government is providing support to 9News correspondent Lauren Tomasi after she was struck by a rubber bullet during her coverage of protests in Los Angeles. The incident, which was caught on camera, showed a police officer firing at close range, hitting Tomasi with what was described as a “non-lethal” projectile.

Despite the alarming incident, Tomasi reassured viewers that she felt “sore, but okay,” and reported that she and her cameraman were otherwise unharmed. The footage has drawn considerable international attention.

Wong described the event as a “really awful” moment and mentioned that they have made appropriate representations regarding the incident. She emphasised the importance of ensuring that any assistance offered is in line with Tomasi’s comfort. The government has reached out through the consulate in Los Angeles and is prepared to provide any necessary help.

Wong reiterated Australia’s belief in a free media and that journalists must be able to perform their duties without fear for their safety. Regarding whether Prime Minister Anthony Albanese would address the issue with US President Donald Trump at the upcoming G7 summit, Wong stated that details of such discussions are typically not disclosed ahead of time, but assured that diplomatic channels were being utilised.

Albanese also condemned the attack, highlighting that Tomasi was clearly identifiable as a member of the press when she was targeted. He underscored the significance of the media’s role and expressed that such actions were unacceptable. In response to the incident, the Los Angeles Police Department has initiated a formal investigation.

This incident not only raises concerns about press safety but also highlights the ongoing tensions in Los Angeles, as further troop deployments have occurred amid the escalating protests.
