In July 2015, Australian surfing champion Mick Fanning faced a terrifying encounter with a shark during the J-Bay Open Final in South Africa, a moment broadcast live and etched in surfing history. As the tenth anniversary of this brush with danger approaches, Fanning reflects on his experience with a calm perspective, stating, “It was just something that happened,” and emphasising that it didn’t change his life drastically.

After the incident, Fanning returned to Jeffreys Bay and won the competition the following year, eventually retiring from competitive surfing in 2018 with three world titles under his belt. Since then, he has shifted his focus towards charity work. In March 2022, he bravely navigated floodwaters in Northern Rivers, New South Wales, on a jet ski, delivering crucial supplies to those affected by severe flooding.

“I know that area really well,” said Fanning, who grew up surfing in Ballina before moving to the Gold Coast. His commitment to helping the community led to the establishment of his Charity Golf Day, which has raised significant funds to assist flood recovery efforts. The inaugural event garnered hundreds of thousands and has now raised nearly $2 million. However, the ongoing devastation faced by the affected communities continues to present serious challenges, with many still struggling to recover years later.

Fanning expressed concern over the recurring disasters, noting that “it seems like it’s just happening every other year now.” Despite the challenges, he remains connected to the people he supports. His upcoming fourth annual Charity Golf Day will see a host of Australian celebrities and sporting legends come together at the Coolangatta and Tweed Heads Golf Club. “We’re just here to let them know that we’re still here… trying to help where we can,” he stated.

The event will feature prominent figures such as Dylan Alcott, Ellyse Perry, and Karl Stefanovic, all contributing their time and efforts to this noble cause. Exciting incentives await golfers, including a chance to win $1 million and a Mercedes-Benz for a hole-in-one. Fanning aims to make each year’s event bigger and better, pushing for increased awareness and support for those in need.

For fans eager to contribute to this cause, donations and merchandise designed by street artist Sid Tapia are available via the Mick Fanning Charity Golf Day website. Through his efforts, Fanning not only champions recovery but also fosters hope and resilience within his community.
