Despite facing criticism for spending habits, such as lavish vacations or trendy café choices, Millennials and Gen Z are grappling with significant financial hurdles. These include rising inflation, stagnant wages, and a nearly inaccessible housing market for those without family financial support.
As a journalist, I recognise the emotional weight of the generational wealth divide, a pressing concern that warrants deeper discussion. In this vein, I’ve launched my podcast, The Pay Off with Sylvia Jeffreys, in partnership with 9Podcasts, aiming to delve into the financial struggles of young Australians and explore practical strategies to help them thrive amid an unyielding economic landscape.
In the inaugural episodes, I interviewed Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Opposition Leader Peter Dutton, engaging them in dialogue about critical policies that will shape the future for younger voters. With young Australians poised to outnumber baby boomers at the upcoming federal election, it’s crucial to empower them with knowledge to make informed decisions at the polls.
While the podcast touches on political figures, its primary focus is financial literacy—equipping listeners with essential knowledge to navigate their financial lives, even during challenging times. Each week, I will engage with influential figures in the business world, such as Mark Bouris and Meggie Palmer, sharing insights and practical advice.
My intent for this podcast is to foster meaningful discussions, avoiding superficial treatments of these important topics. I aim to present every episode as an opportunity for listeners, regardless of their previous experience with budgeting or investing, to gain valuable insights that can be applied in their lives.
