Western Australia is bracing for the severe impact of Tropical Cyclone Zelia, which is anticipated to make landfall as a Category 4 storm. The system is projected to unleash damaging wind gusts exceeding 200km/h and over 500mm of rain, raising concerns about significant flooding that could isolate major roads for up to a week.

As Zelia approaches, areas around the Pilbara coast are already experiencing heavy rains and flight cancellations have begun. The Bureau of Meteorology has issued flood warnings, particularly for regions between Port Hedland and Bidyadanga, highlighting the potential for dangerous storm tides and damaging waves.

Met officials caution that wind gusts of 120km/h are forming near the coastal regions, urging residents to prepare for the storm’s erratic behaviour and the possibility of rapid changes in its path. Emergency services are on high alert, with additional personnel and equipment deployed to the affected areas.

Residents are advised to stay informed through evacuation and weather warnings and to ensure safe access to necessary supplies as the storm’s approach looms. As Zelia is expected to weaken significantly after landfall, the focus now lies on mitigating its immediate impacts.
