A significant milestone has been achieved at Werribee Open Range Zoo in Victoria with the arrival of nine Asian elephants, relocating from Melbourne Zoo. This move comes after a careful five-day operation, allowing the elephants to inhabit a spacious 21-hectare environment.
Zookeepers have reported that the elephants are already exploring their new surroundings, which feature multiple habitats, large mud wallows, and impressive pools that can hold nearly two million litres of water for swimming. Lucy Truelson, one of the zookeepers, expressed delight in witnessing the elephants adapt to their surroundings, stating that they appear content, playful, and thriving.
The new habitat design aims to enhance the elephants’ well-being and social interactions. This innovative Elephant Trail is comparable in size to the entire footprint of Melbourne Zoo, which translates to five MCG football fields. While the elephants are currently being given some time to adjust, zoo visitors will have to wait a few weeks before they can meet the herd.
Truelson emphasised the importance of ensuring the elephants are comfortable and familiar with their new space before opening it to the public. This relocation marks a new chapter in their care and management, showcasing a commitment to creating a nurturing environment for these magnificent creatures.
