A Finnish initiative providing new parents with a baby care box is being trialled in Canada. Since 1949, the maternity package in Finland has been given to all birth and adoptive parents, featuring 50 essential items such as clothes, blankets, and a book. Notably, the box can double as a safe crib, and parents have the option to receive a cash alternative.

Recognising the potential benefits of this social support model, the University of Calgary is investigating its impact on vulnerable families. Their ‘Welcome to Parenthood’ project aims to enhance community strength by ensuring that families receive necessary assistance upon welcoming a new baby. The trial mimics the Finnish kit, transforming into a crib while also connecting families to support groups and mentors.

The initiative aspires to identify effective resources that foster the health and well-being of at-risk infants. Currently, the boxes are distributed through 11 local support organisations, with numerous families having already benefited from this innovative approach.
