Father Chris Riley, aged 70, has passed away following a prolonged health struggle. Originally from Victoria, he moved to Sydney where he gained recognition as the founder of Youth Off The Streets in 1991. This non-profit organisation was established to aid young individuals facing homelessness and various challenges. What began as a modest initiative in Sydney’s King’s Cross has since evolved into a nationwide support service across Australia.

Riley held the position of CEO of Youth Off The Streets until 2020, dedicating his life to the welfare of disadvantaged youth. In acknowledgment of his efforts, he was appointed a member of the Order of Australia in 2006. His accolades also include the Human Rights Medal awarded by the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission and a nomination for the NSW Australian of the Year Award in 2012. Additionally, in 2010, he was honoured with an honorary doctorate from the University of Western Sydney.

A Roman Catholic priest and member of the Salesian order, Father Riley had been in declining health for several years, having been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in 2019. Due to his health issues, he later entered respite care following medical advice, as confirmed by the Catholic Diocese of Broken Bay.

In a heartfelt tribute, Judy Barraclough, CEO of Youth Off The Streets, reflected on Riley’s immense contribution, stating that his commitment to empowering at-risk young Australians has created a lasting legacy. She affirmed that his vision and determination would continue to inspire the organisation’s mission to provide safety, support, and education for disadvantaged children and youth.

Anne Fitzgerald, Chairperson of Youth Off The Streets’ Board, expressed that Riley’s impact on the lives of young people in Sydney and beyond would not be forgotten. She highlighted his tireless advocacy for the homeless and disadvantaged youth, praising his compassion, resilience, and steadfast belief in the potential of every young person to succeed.

Father Chris Riley leaves behind a remarkable legacy of service and dedication to Australia’s youth, inspiring future generations to continue the vital work he championed.
