A man from Sydney has been implicated in a scheme to defraud various individuals of at least $1 million, allegedly capitalising on the accidental death of his three-year-old son in 2003. Following the tragic incident at Burwood shopping centre, the man initiated a lawsuit against the centre.

According to NSW Police, the man solicited funds from acquaintances to support his legal expenses. In 2007, the lawsuit concluded with him receiving a $400,000 settlement. However, police claim that those who provided financial assistance for the legal fees never received any repayment. Instead, it is alleged that he deceived these individuals, continuing to collect money without fulfilling his promises to reimburse them. Detective Chief Superintendent Christine McDonald mentioned that rather than returning any funds, he sought further contributions, asserting he needed additional money to pursue the lawsuit.

By 2016, it is alleged that he told his victims that the funds were tied up in a trust fund for his surviving son, despite the lawsuit being settled. The police have described this case as a significant breach of trust, as the victims genuinely believed they were aiding a grieving parent. Many of them were friends or acquaintances who had backed him due to their faith in his character. Reports indicate that the accused may have misused a considerable portion of the funds through gambling.

Over eight years, it’s claimed the man managed to accrue $1.3 million through his alleged deceit. Authorities are now reaching out to the public, encouraging anyone who might have suffered losses at his hands to come forward. The 68-year-old was arrested in a unit on East Street in Five Dock as part of a police operation and has since been charged with three counts of dishonestly obtaining a financial advantage by deception. This situation sheds light on the tragic exploitation of personal loss for financial gain.
