Set against the backdrop of verdant hills populated by grazing black Angus, Luke Chaplin carries on a proud family tradition of cattle mustering, a practice that has persisted through four generations. However, Luke’s approach diverges significantly from the past; instead of navigating rugged terrain, he simply shifts a short distance of 25 metres to launch a drone from his verandah, utilising a monitor and remote control.

As he surveys the herd along the fence line, he notes that a few cattle are unaccounted for. Employing the drone’s infrared cameras, Luke quickly locates the missing group near a creek and directs them back to the main herd. This innovative tool, dubbed the “Sky Kelpie,” has revolutionised the way livestock is managed on Australian farms.

Luke explains how drones have enhanced efficiency in locating livestock: “It’s really changed the game,” he remarks. “You’re a lot more efficient at finding your livestock. With high-resolution thermal cameras, we can also apply the drone as a pressure tool to encourage the cattle to move.”

This shift towards drone technology marks a significant evolution in Australian farming practices, showcasing how modern technology is increasingly replacing traditional methods, such as the use of working dogs, in livestock management.
