A family from Adelaide narrowly escaped a devastating fire that caused nearly $1 million in damage to their home in North Haven. The incident took place shortly after midnight on Southern Cross Avenue, with strong winds complicating efforts to combat the blaze.
The family of four was able to evacuate as the flames quickly spread, but they were later treated for smoke inhalation at a nearby hospital. Neighbours also braced for evacuation, fearing the fire’s rapid progression due to the windy conditions.
The Metropolitan Fire Service (MFS) responded promptly, battling the fire which had engulfed the garage. Firefighter Phil Ross indicated that the garage, suspected to have been used as a bedroom, appeared to be the fire’s origin. Crews worked efficiently to extinguish the flames and maintained a presence on-site for four hours afterwards to monitor for any flare-ups.
The total damage from the fire is estimated at around $800,000. Fortunately, the family holds insurance, though they now face a significant clean-up effort.
