The La Niña season in Australia has officially ended, and meteorologists are predicting the possibility of an El Niño event later this year. The Bureau of Meteorology has indicated that the current neutral state of the Pacific Ocean is expected to last until at least late autumn, but there are strong indicators that El Niño could develop in the second half of the year.

While sea surface temperatures in the tropical Pacific are currently around average, there is a significant area of warmer water accumulating below the surface. This deep warm water is anticipated to rise within the coming months, thereby raising the likelihood of El Niño conditions emerging.

Most global forecasting models predict that these conditions may start to take shape between late autumn and late winter. Some models even suggest the potential for a strong or super El Niño, although it remains uncertain how greatly this will impact Australia’s weather patterns.

An El Niño phenomenon occurs when warmer-than-average waters are present in the central and eastern tropical Pacific, counterbalanced by cooler waters in the western regions. This state affects atmospheric pressure and wind patterns, which can lead to reduced cloud cover and rainfall across various parts of Australia.

Following the conclusion of the La Niña phase on March 31, which began in spring of the previous year, Australia experienced above-average rainfall, particularly in northern and central regions. However, this La Niña was described as relatively weak, as it did not deliver the expected wet conditions to some areas, serving as a reminder of the variability in the impacts of different La Niña events.

As forecasting continues, Australians are advised to stay informed of the evolving climate conditions, which could ultimately lead to a hotter summer if El Niño develops as anticipated.
