On a sunny May day at the Western Sydney Wanderers’ headquarters in Rooty Hill, Alex Gersbach reflects on his diverse football journey that has taken him across the globe. The left-back, who grew up in Auburn, Sydney, has lived in captivating locales such as Norway, France, the Netherlands, Denmark, the USA, and Sweden throughout his decade-long career.

Now, at 28, Gersbach finds himself back in Sydney after spending nearly ten years abroad. His return was unexpected but welcomed. He recalls his hesitance before returning but notes that a conversation with Wanderers’ coach Alen Stajcic quickly reassured him. Gersbach admits that getting fit took time, but he feels he’s hitting his stride, contributing significantly to the team in recent matches.

Gersbach’s football career has been a rollercoaster, starting with a celebrated stint at Sydney FC before moving to Rosenborg BK, where he made his Socceroos debut under Ange Postecoglou. His journey included significant achievements, such as winning league titles and a Norwegian Football Cup. However, he acknowledges the challenge of constant relocation, as the life of a professional footballer often hinges on transfer market dynamics.

After spending time at various clubs, including a loan to Lens and stints in other European countries, Gersbach is now embracing the idea of stability and home life in Sydney. He expresses a desire for a sense of belonging, having not experienced much stability since leaving Australia at 18. Although he enjoyed his time in various places, he realises that settling down has become more important as he matures.

He discusses the intensity of the transfer process, recalling times when unexpected moves required rapid adjustments. Yet, despite the thrill of living abroad, Gersbach is enthused about his new chapter with the Wanderers. Stajcic’s straightforward approach and vision for the club made returning home an easy decision, leading Gersbach to sign a two-and-a-half-year deal.

As he prepares for an elimination final against Melbourne Victory, Gersbach has regained his fitness, having played full matches in recent fixtures. He acknowledges the necessity of tactical discipline to counter the attacking strengths of their opponent, aiming for another victory to build momentum for the club’s aspirations.

With a renewed sense of purpose in his hometown, Gersbach is eager to establish a winning culture and contribute to the Wanderers’ journey to become the premier club in Australia. As he shares this exciting phase of his career, the vibrant energy of his surroundings reflects the enthusiasm of a player ready to thrive where it all began.
