Craig Bellamy, the long-time coach of the Melbourne Storm, reflects on the turmoil of the 2010 salary cap scandal, describing that year as a “rollercoaster,” with the lowest point being when fullback Billy Slater suggested his departure. This moment, initially shocking to Bellamy, turned out to be a prank, as the entire team burst into laughter, revealing their camaraderie despite the looming crisis.

On April 22, 2010, NRL CEO David Gallop announced that the Storm would be stripped of two premierships, three minor premierships, and all competition points for the season due to a salary cap breach amounting to $3.7 million over five years. This significant scandal not only rocked the club but also jeopardised its survival, leading to immense pressure on both players and management.

Despite the adversity, Bellamy chose to maintain rigorous training protocols, determined to uphold a sense of normalcy and professionalism. He candidly shared his concerns with the team, contemplating whether their motivation would dwindle post-scandal. The response from the players was heartening; following Slater’s prank, the mood lifted significantly.

Over the course of the stripped season, the club suffered but showcased remarkable resilience, winning ten of their eighteen games post-scandal. This tenacity paved the way for a turnaround, culminating in a minor premiership in 2011 and a grand final win in 2012.

Reflecting on the experience, Bellamy admits it was a challenging time, especially for the players who couldn’t compete for points, an emotional burden as they strived for success on the field. The club has since rebounded strongly, consistently remaining a top contender in the league.

Bellamy is set to reach a coaching milestone with his 580th game, a testament to his enduring leadership and the robust culture of the Storm. As he looks back, he acknowledges the trials they faced but emphasises the unity and strength the ordeal fostered within the team, hoping for a brighter future ahead.
