League icon Andrew Johns has elaborated on his choice to include Tom Trbojevic over Dylan Edwards in the NSW Blues lineup as anticipation builds for Origin I. Blues coach Laurie Daley faces a difficult decision with Trbojevic making his return from injury, while Edwards is the current player boasting a perfect record in series wins.

Despite Edwards’ success, Johns believes Trbojevic should be the preferred selection. On the Wide World of Sports’ show, he noted, “Turbo hasn’t played fullback for NSW,” and cited Billy Slater’s endorsement of Trbojevic as “the best when fully fit.” Johns expressed confidence in Trbojevic’s potential to dominate the game if he reaches full fitness.

James Tedesco is also in the mix for the fullback position, which adds another layer of complexity to Daley’s decision-making process. Should Edwards or Tedesco be chosen, Johns mentioned he would position Trbojevic as a centre, potentially replacing Stephen Crichton. The competition for the other centre position appears to hinge on either Bradman Best or Latrell Mitchell, while the wing spots are likely to be filled by Brian To’o and Zac Lomax.

If Jarome Luai is selected over Mitchell Moses for the five-eighth role, Edwards is predicted to retain his place. Johns pointed out that this would create a gameplay style typical of Penrith: methodical and grinding. He highlighted NSW’s previous strengths, especially in game two last year, where the combination of Latrell and Angus Crichton proved too potent for defences, leading to a significant first-half advantage.

Former Blues coach Brad Fittler supports Edwards and emphasised the need for him to perform convincingly in upcoming matches with the Panthers to solidify his spot, acknowledging Tedesco’s impressive form.

With the stakes rising and the decisions to be made soon, the final selections will shape the Blues’ strategy and capabilities as they aim for success in the Origin series.
