In the boxing arena, changes in team dynamics are commonplace, but it’s unusual for a fighter to part ways with their coach due to dietary choices. This situation is particularly evident with Justis Huni, who gained national recognition after defeating Paul Gallen in 2021, always accompanied by his father and trainer Rocki Huni. Rocki took on the coaching role as Justis transitioned to professional boxing, following guidance from Mark Wilson during his amateur career.
However, as Huni prepares for a monumental fight against Fabio Wardley, aiming to become only the second Australian heavyweight to secure a world title in over a century, he will do so without his father in his corner. The bout is set to take place in front of a sold-out crowd of 25,000 at Ipswich Town’s stadium.
After a series of victories while feeling unwell and performing with low energy, Huni made the pivotal decision to return to Wilson at the end of last year. His manager, Mick Francis, expressed concerns about Huni’s condition and attitude, which was compounded by ongoing injuries. Despite maintaining an undefeated record, Huni showcased lackluster performances and questionable preparations, which included a notorious instance of consuming hot dogs the night before a fight.
Recognising that a change was necessary, Francis had a candid discussion with Huni about his diet and focus. Post-conversation, Huni has since embraced new training methods and improved his conditioning and nutrition, as well as undergoing elbow surgery to eliminate limitations.
With only five weeks’ notice to fight Wardley—who has a home advantage and greater preparation—Huni has managed to shed weight effectively. The bout, however, presents an uphill battle; Huni faces a fiercely supportive local crowd for Wardley. Francis has expressed worries about Huni’s safety should he win, but he believes that Huni is mentally prepared for the challenge.
A victory could position Huni for a significant title fight against Oleksandr Usyk in the near future, should Usyk defeat Daniel Dubois as expected. Huni is set to enter the ring against Wardley in a highly-anticipated clash, marking a potential new chapter in his career.
