Ruan Sims, a legendary figure in the NRLW, has expressed her enthusiasm for the expansion of the Magic Round initiative as the competition gears up for its inaugural event. The first edition will take place in Newcastle, kicking off with a match between the Titans and Bulldogs, marking a significant milestone since the NRL launched its own version of Magic Round in 2019, inspired by the success seen in the Super League.

During a segment of Wide World of Sports’ NRLW Weekly, Sims discussed the potential for taking the Magic Round to various regions in future years. She is particularly keen on the idea, suggesting that after Newcastle, Wollongong’s WIN Stadium would be an ideal next location. Sims highlighted that this area has a deep-rooted passion for rugby league and possesses the necessary infrastructure to accommodate a large influx of fans.

In her vision, Sims imagines the event spreading out into rural areas, such as Mudgee, which she believes would resonate well with the communities that hold rugby league dear. Furthermore, she advocated for the inclusion of Queensland locations, such as Redcliffe, and suggested that expanding the reach even further north to places like Townsville and Cairns could help engage a wider audience.

With the potential inclusion of the Perth Bears in the NRL, Sims noted that this could open up new opportunities for promoting the women’s game as well. She believes that cities like Melbourne also offer significant potential for collaboration and expansion of the Magic Round concept.

Sims emphasised that while the event is off to a commendable start in Newcastle, the broader vision for growth is essential. As she put it, taking the Magic Round to diverse locations is a “great step in the right direction,” and she is optimistic that this will help foster a greater connection with rugby league fans across Australia. The conversations surrounding the future of Magic Round exemplify an eagerness to engage communities and grow the sport even further, ensuring that rugby league remains an integral part of Australia’s sporting culture.
