Ruan Sims, a pioneering figure in women’s rugby league, believes that the NRLW’s expansion to 12 teams this season will enhance the quality of the competition rather than compromise it. With the return of the Warriors after a four-year absence and the Canterbury Bulldogs set to join in 2025, the league’s foundation has never been stronger.
Despite concerns about the potential dilution of talent with more teams, Sims remains optimistic about the NRLW’s growth. Speaking on Nine’s NRLW Weekly podcast, she acknowledged the common apprehension surrounding new teams but emphasised the measured approach the league has taken to expansion. Sims believes this strategy is essential for sustainability and raises the standard of play.
She stated, "You have to have both sides of that coin," highlighting the importance of balancing risk and caution in the league’s development. Reflecting on the previous pace of expansion, Sims noted that while she felt there should have been six teams from the outset, the league’s gradual growth has ultimately been beneficial.
This season’s expansion is viewed as an opportunity to enhance the NRLW’s profile, widen its geographical reach, and create new talent pathways. Sims pointed out that introducing new teams compels clubs to innovate and explore avenues for sourcing players, such as tapping into talent from other sports, including rugby sevens and netball.
The addition of the Warriors and Bulldogs has already seen impressive recruitment efforts. The Bulldogs have secured a blend of seasoned NRLW talent and promising juniors, while the Warriors have recruited Olympic gold medallist Michaela Brake from rugby sevens, creating what Sims calls a "pretty impressive-looking squad."
Sims expressed her excitement about the Warriors’ return, emphasising the importance of including Māori and Pacifica teams and players, who significantly enrich the competition’s cultural diversity and talent pool.
As the NRLW continues to grow, Sims is confident it will attract more high-quality coaches and staff, further enhancing the competition’s standards. Co-host Marlee Silva echoed this sentiment, affirming that the expansion will inspire innovation among clubs.
In summary, while some may fear that adding teams could diminish the overall talent in the NRLW, Sims argues that such expansion encourages excellence and innovation—ultimately driving the sport forward and enriching its competitive landscape.
